How to Reduce Spam Comments on WordPress Blog

Spam comments are very harmful for the reputation and the rankings of the website. You must have gone through this that, when you open your website dashboard you see for example: 2000 new comments, but when you check them all of them are spam, filled with ugly URLs and other languages that you even don’t understand. So, in this post I am going to discuss steps to Reduce Spam Comments on WordPress Blog.

Mainly the spam comments may be of two types: one is the spam comments from bots and some other from real spammers that want to hurt your website or want a pagerank for their website.

So, here are the steps that will surely help you in reducing your spam comments on WordPress Blog.

Steps to Reduce Spam Comments on WordPress Blog

1. Install Akismet Plugin

The first and the foremost step will be to install the akismet plugin to your website now. This is one of great method of separating your real comments from the spam comments. They send the suspicious comments to the spam folder. This plugin is not 100% efficient as it may even leave some comments from putting them in spam box.

Still you won’t like to see those many comments in spam box. For that follow the next step.

2. Install G.A.S.P. plugin

The GASP (Growmap anti spambot plugin) helps you to add a check-box at the end of the comment box that would verify if the one who is commenting is a bot or a human being.  You can customize this plugin by providing any statement that you want before the check box, like “Check the box to prove you are human” etc. This will reduce the number of comments to your spam box by about 98%.

3. Disable comments from old posts

The posts that are 2 or more months old, just disable the comments to that posts. You may have observed that mostly the spam comments are produced on the older posts. This step will reduce the number of spam comments by huge margin.

How to Disable comments on older posts?

  • Go to settings >> Discussions
  • Under other comment settings
  • Tick on the option : Automatically close the comments for posts older than _____ days.
  • Just fill in the blank filled with the number of days you want.
  • Job is done.

4. Use capche code

These all steps discussed are enough for reducing the number of spam comments by a large amount but if still you want to reduce the spam count, you can add the capche code instead of tick box. By the way, capche also works the same way as the check box plugin GASP works. So, you can choose which ever option you like for reducing the spam comments.

5. Close the comments on pages

Don’t allow the comments on the pages as these are the places which are mostly targeted by the spammers for the spam. Most likely the comments are not needed on pages. And if you really require comments for a particular page then you can surely enable it for that particular page.

I hope these all tips to Reduce Spam Comments on WordPress Blog were helpful for you, so do share this article.

  4. Hi Vishal,

Thanks for this wonderful article post, comment spam is one of the most challenging issue bloggers encounter almost everyday.

The tips you share was great, but in my own opinion, DISQUS is the best. When install & configure disqus, you won’t be seing any spam comment made by bot. And it also saves from install over 2-3 plugins as describe in your post.

Thanks once again and have a nice weekend

I found the link to this post on Kingged and i have also kingged it on kingged.com

    • Oh thnks Olamosh for your valuable response.

You are right enabling DisQus also helps greatly in solving problem against the spams.

      Keep visiting 🙂

  5. Hi Vishal,
First of all, I think you must correct some of the grammatical errors in the intro part of your this post. There are quite a lot of them and it doesn’t tell well of the credibility of your post.

Secondly, the message of this post is well taken. Your points on how to reduce spam comments on WordPress blogs are clear and real.

The use of plugins like Akismet, G.A.S.P and other tools is recommended. However, most bloggers would prefer to install captcha codes as extra measures.

I have shared this comment in kingged.com – the content syndication and social marketing platform for Internet marketers, where this post was shared.

    • Hey Sunday,

Thanks for pointing the mistake. As my laptop’s “O” and “F” keys are little bit out of order so some time it misses the place and these mistakes show up.

Thanks again for informing the mistakes 🙂

  6. Spam comments are definitely targeted on the established posts with good ranking. It is always a best idea to close the comments on older posts.

The GASP plugin and captcha gives the human extra work before commenting which a bot will fail to do, so definitely a lot of time will be saved in clearing spam comments.

Thanks for sharing all these tricks. i kingged this post on kingged.

  7. I do only use the Akismet plugin for my spam comments and this does seem to be enough for me, Oh sure once in a while one may slip by but I just delete it No Biggy. As for adding these stupid capche codes’ Don’t do it! I have left blogs before when otherwise I would have left a message, Some are so confusing.. GRR

I have also noted that a lot of people do have the comments closed on their pages I had not Idea as to why!! ow I do Wow I am wondering why these pages would be targeted more??

    Great Share.. Chery :))

P.S. I did land here on your blog Via Kingged

    • Using Akismat is good, but you may have noticed that there are too many comments in the spam box of akismat as well, so if u want to remove away that its better to use above method.

And yeah I also don’t like capche code so i use the other option of tick instead 🙂

thnks for valuable comment 🙂 Keep visiting 🙂

  8. How about using social login? It is a great way to prevent spammers and also we can get useful social profile data, social analytics that can help our online marketing effort.
